Twelve Dead, Including Famous Singer, in Tragic Plane Crash Off Remote Island — Authorities Confirm No Survivors as Investigation Begins Into Cause of Crash That Claimed Lives of Crew, Passengers, and Beloved Music Icon, Sparking Global Mourning and Tributes Across the Industry.

A devastating plane crash off the coast of Roatán Island, Honduras, has claimed the lives of twelve people, including beloved Garifuna musician and cultural icon Aurelio Martinez. The tragedy occurred Monday shortly after takeoff from Roatán International Airport, shaking the small island community and prompting a swift national emergency response.

The aircraft, operated by Lanhsa Airlines, was en route to La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland when it went down roughly one kilometer from the airport. According to Honduras’ transport ministry, the flight carried 14 passengers and three crew members. Among the deceased were two children, a French national, and a U.S. citizen. The remaining victims were Honduran nationals, many of whom were believed to be returning home from the island after a weekend visit.

Images from the crash site show a grim scene: emergency workers using flashlights and small boats in the fading daylight to retrieve bodies from the sea. The crash site, located in waters surrounded by coral reefs and known for its appeal to tourists, became a focus of both mourning and determination as search and rescue operations stretched into the night. Authorities say the crash occurred during takeoff, raising questions about mechanical failure or possible weather-related complications.

Franklin Borjas, the Roatán fire chief, confirmed that recovery efforts were ongoing. “One victim remains missing,” he said, highlighting the challenges posed by rough sea conditions and scattered debris. Despite the adverse weather, emergency teams, including divers and marine patrols, have been deployed continuously since the incident to locate the final victim and secure the crash site.

President Xiomara Castro activated Honduras’ Emergency Operations Committee (COE) in the wake of the tragedy. The coordinated response now involves the Honduran Armed Forces, National Police, Red Cross, Ministry of Health, and various disaster relief agencies. Medical teams have been mobilized to treat survivors and transport the injured to hospitals in San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims,” said President Castro. “May God protect people’s lives. We are doing everything in our power to support those affected.”

The death of Aurelio Martinez has struck a particularly painful chord across Honduras and among the global Garifuna community. Widely regarded as a champion of Garifuna music and culture, Martinez was also a former congressman who used his platform to advocate for indigenous and Afro-Caribbean rights. Fans and fellow musicians have taken to social media to express grief and share tributes to his legacy, which includes international albums and performances that brought Garifuna sounds to the world stage.

As the nation enters a period of mourning, officials say investigations into the cause of the crash will begin immediately. The Civil Aviation Authority is expected to lead the inquiry, with support from international aviation experts. For now, the focus remains on the families of the victims, the recovery of the final missing individual, and the safe care of survivors. The tragedy has not only claimed lives but also taken a cultural figure whose music symbolized resilience and identity for an entire community.
