This lump may appear because of something you do every day… See more

You might not notice it at first—a small, painless lump under your skin, often near your jaw, neck, armpit, or groin. But before you panic, know this: it could be caused by something as simple as your daily shaving routine, your go-to hairstyle, or even how you clean your ears. These lumps are often enlarged lymph nodes or benign cysts, but they can signal that your body is reacting to an everyday habit in ways you never expected.

1. Shaving Too Closely
If you frequently nick yourself while shaving (especially with razors that tug at hairs), you might develop folliculitis—inflamed hair follicles that can lead to small, tender bumps. Worse, repeated irritation can cause lymph nodes to swell as they work to fight off minor infections from tiny cuts. Dermatologists recommend using a single-blade razor, shaving with the grain, and applying aloe vera post-shave to reduce irritation.

2. Tight Hairstyles (Yes, Even Your Favorite Ponytail)
That sleek high ponytail or man bun might be causing occipital lymph nodes (at the base of your skull) to swell. Constant pulling can inflame the scalp, leading to small, rubbery lumps. If you also use heavy styling products, clogged pores can form pilar cysts—harmless but annoying bumps. Try looser styles and give your scalp a break.

If you’re a frequent Q-tip user, you might unknowingly be pushing wax deeper into your ear canal, leading to blocked lymph nodes behind the ears. Even worse, aggressive cleaning can cause small epidermoid cysts near the earlobes. Doctors recommend letting ears clean themselves naturally or using a damp cloth instead.
