Una observación más detenida de los dientes dentados en su interior revela la clave para comprender su función. Estos dientes no están colocados para cortar, sino para sujetar y desprender. Su espaciamiento regular y su alineación curva indican un movimiento repetitivo aplicado sobre una superficie redondeada. Este diseño apunta claramente a un desgranador manual de maíz, una herramienta práctica que antiguamente se utilizaba para separar los granos de las mazorcas secas. Antes de que la maquinaria agrícola moderna se volviera común, los agricultores dependían de dispositivos manuales como este para procesar sus cosechas de forma eficiente y preparar los cultivos para su almacenamiento o venta.

El uso de un desgranador tradicional de maíz es bastante sencillo. Primero se toma una mazorca completamente seca, ya que los granos firmes se desprenden con mayor facilidad. Luego se coloca la mazorca entre los brazos articulados de la herramienta, de modo que los dientes presionen contra las hileras de granos. Al aplicar una presión constante y girar la mazorca gradualmente, los dientes van desprendiendo los granos en secciones, permitiendo separarlos de la mazorca con rapidez y poco esfuerzo. Este método, aunque simple, representaba una gran ayuda para los agricultores de generaciones pasadas, quienes necesitaban procesar grandes cantidades de maíz utilizando únicamente herramientas manuales resistentes y confiables.
